spots on grape leaves #878277

Asked July 22, 2024, 2:20 PM EDT

Table grapes, Himrod, developed spots and little crinkles on the leaves.  Is it something I need to worry about?  What does it mean?  Can I compost these leaves?

Hi Lida and thanks for your question about the bumps on your grape leaves. You have erineum mites which are usually not a serious problem. There are predatory mites and beetles that will help control the population and you can spray the vines with dormant oil next winter.

I wouldn't compost the leaves, as most of our compost piles don't get hot enough to kill critters or their eggs. You can put them in the city compost which usually does heat up more or you can trash them, but you don't need to pick them all off.

Here's an article with more information about their life cycle and controls. https://ask2.extension.org/scp/tickets.php?id=878277

Thanks for the great pictures!
