Mulberry tree? #878276

Asked July 22, 2024, 2:20 PM EDT

This is a leaf from a tree growing in our yard that we didn’t notice last year. It’s already about 12’ tall. It has a small, reddish trunk. Is it a mulberry and should we get rid of it? We actually need a tree in that spot because the nearby maple is old and doesn’t look great. Both are on the shore of the South River. Thanks

Expert Response

Although tree ID can be difficult or inconclusive from one view of a single leaf, yes, this does appear to be White Mulberry. As an invasive species, ideally it should be removed and another native or non-invasive species grown in its place. Multiple species of native trees qualify for a rebate from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, if it helps to cover part of the cost of a replacement: Marylanders Plant Trees.
