Transplanting Ivory Silk Japanese Lilac tree #878219

Asked July 22, 2024, 10:48 AM EDT

About 3 years ago, I planted an Ivory Silk Japanese Lilac tree roughly 10 feet in front of our house and somewhat near the flagpole, where the tree branches may eventually reach. The trunk is still somewhat small with a diameter of about 1 3/4 inches. I would like to dig up this tree and transplant it farther out into our yard, 7 feet away from the street sidewalk. It will be planted in a stonewalled flower bed that we recently built. I plan to replant this tree in the flower bed next year to allow time for the new location's soil to settle and prevent the tree from sinking. I found information on your site about transplanting a lilac tree either in the fall or early spring. Would this apply to my Ivory Silk Japanese Lilac tree, and when is the most preferred time to replant it? I appreciate your input.

Expert Response

It could also be transplanted in spring or fall. I prefer fall because it gives plants extra time to establish before summer. When translating, try to get as much of the rootball as possible. Good luck!
