What kind of beer? #878213

Wondering what kind of bee this is. Are they endangered?

Howard County Maryland

Expert Response

This appears to be a wasp, not a bee, and in particular it looks like a Yellowjacket. There are several species of Yellowjacket native to Maryland (and one that is widespread but not native), and they are not endangered in our region. The linked web page provides more information about our local social wasps like Yellowjackets, if you are curious about their life cycles.

Thank you for that info.  Apparently we have a nest in our attic.  Your link mentioned it won't get past the winter and it won't get reused but we don't want it.  There appears to only be one entrance/exit but we're worried they might find a way to get inside the house.  Do you have any advice you can give us regarding options?  Is spraying the entrance with wasp spray a practical approach?

Thanks again,

Hello John,

Spraying the entrance of a wasp nest that is located inside a building structure is risky, since the wasps might try to create a new nest entrance/exit that happens to be into the building instead of outside. Some people do have luck using wasp spray in this situation, however, so it's up to you if you want to risk it. The earlier in the summer season they're managed, the smaller the nest population will be; wasp nests peak in population size by late summer and early autumn. Otherwise, it may be prudent to hire a pest control professional that has experience with wasp removal to deal with the nest.
