I’m in search of deer resistant shade tolerant shrubs. I want to create a hedge along a north facing woodland edge on my property about 100 feet long. I’m in the process of removing invasive plants on this border and will be planting the shrubs in place. I prefer a native species supportive of wildlife. My property borders a county park with deer populations so high level of deer resistance is important. I identified Arrowwood viburnum as a strong candidate. I’ve found bare root plants available online and could plant a lot economically using those. Would appreciate any advice or insight regarding what species to use and planting tips.

Hi, Patrick,
We recommend planting more than one species in hedges and borders. Please click on the link for our article Plants for Mixed Privacy Screens. In the article, you will find charts of suggested plants. The chart indicates whether plant is native to Maryland and the deer resistance of each plant.
Another source for recommendations is the booklet
Chesapeake Natives. This has lists of plants native to our area. In the back of the booklet on page 73, there is also a list of deer resistant plants. The body of the booklet has charts giving the characteristics of the plants.
Thank you for your question.
