Minimal Leaf Growth on Azalea #878155

Asked July 21, 2024, 5:52 PM EDT

Hello! I planted an azalea in May. Followed the planting instructions to a T. I placed pine bark around the base to add the acidity it will add over time. It bloomed great and looked very healthy but now the leaf growth seems minimal. I’ve attached a picture of it in bloom and a current photo. Does it need a dose of fertilizer? Thanks! Jim

Expert Response

It doesn’t need fertilizer, it needs to grow vigorous roots, fertilizer stimulates top growth.  There is an old adage that is very true. First year they sleep, second year they creep, third year they leap. Transplantation shock is very common and almost impossible to avoid.
Keep up the good care.

Thanks so much for the quick response! I had never heard of that old adage but it sure makes a lot of sense. Appreciate your help!
