Identify this berry please #878145
Asked July 21, 2024, 4:03 PM EDT
I did not plant this. I have lived here 10 years and this is the first time I have seen this berry in my yard. It is growing under some old pines and a cottonwood. I was told by a friend it is a chokecherry, but the cluster of berries doesn’t look like chokecherry pictures I have found.
Before I harvest the berries for a friend to can, or destroy the bush if it’s toxic to my dogs, I want to know what I am dealing with.
thank you.

Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Ask Extension.
It does appear from your photos that you have a chokecherry, Prunus virginiana.
