Help with Arborvitae #878128

Asked July 21, 2024, 2:40 PM EDT

Is there a way to encourage new growth on the bare side of an arborvitae under the two environments below? (See attached photos) 1. Full sun - replacements planted by utility company after they did work in an easement. Bare side developed due to lack of appropriate care for the plant. One plat is bare on the east side. The other plant is bare on the west side. 2. Half day shade - bare side developed from pruning required to keep branches off of neighbors garage and ways from eaves. The bare side faces south, and is shaded by neighbors garage in the afternoon

Expert Response

Thank you for contacting Ask Extension. Looking at your arborvitae, I am not sure that you will be able to get any new growth on the bare areas.

It is also important to ensure that the plant is not over-pruned, as yours are, as arborvitae do not respond well to hard pruning, and they may not produce new growth if pruned too severely. When pruning, one must not remove all the foliage from any one branch. Since new buds are only produced on branches with new foliage, new growth will not emerge if one cuts off all the foliage on a branch, so it's important to avoid this.

Remember, arborvitae are sturdy plants with very few pest problems, but they do require proper care and conditions to thrive.
