Hello, I just read an article that some bags of soils, compost and bulbs are infected with a fungus Aspergillus in the USA. Is this factual and in Oregon? If so, what brands should we avoid?
Thanks

Expert Response
Thank you for your questions, Angela. This fungus has been in our native soil, perhaps pre-dating humans. OSU has been studying its presence in hemp crops for several years. Current research has discovered it in the materials you reference and, in light of the widespread commercial economy, is probably in Oregon, so avoidance is probably impossible. But the risk to humans appears to be for those with compromised immune systems, per this source: https://news.uga.edu/multidrug-resistant-fungi-in-soil-compost-flower-bulbs/
I suggest you discuss this with a medical professional who can advise you. Good luck!
