Pruning a maple sapling #878096

Asked July 21, 2024, 10:53 AM EDT

I have a sapling maple tree that came up in our yard from our maple tree and I would like to prune it to look more symmetrical.  It is approximately 4 1/2 foot tall with the only 2 branches coming out on the same side.  Very short leaves  are on both sides.  So, should I cut off 1 branch and hope something will come out on the opposite side or should I just get rid of the sapling?  I could not find any site online that would discuss this type of problem.  I even tried Pennsylvania Master Gardeners site.

Thank you.

Expert Response

Hello,

If the sapling has sprouted in a location where its mature size will not cause a space conflict with structures or site use, then I see no harm in leaving it. If it is only 4.5' tall at the moment, i would not worry about the lack of branches on one side. As it grows taller, it will develop a symmetrical branch structure. Any branches below 8' are typically going to be temporary branches that the tree will either shed or will be pruned off to provide ground clearance. If you are in an area frequented by deer, then you may wish to cage the tree to avoid harm from browse and antler rub.

Good luck,
