What is this red bug #878083

Asked July 21, 2024, 8:05 AM EDT

Over the past 3 years I have noticed my Tiger Lillies and Asiatic Lillies are not doing well. This year I noted a red bug on the leaves and within less than 2 weeks the plants are totally dead. I do have a StarGazer Lilly and oddly enough that plant is untouched. Please help? What is this red bug and what can I do about this? I have had these plants for 15+ years without a problem.

This is a lily leaf beetle. The most effective way to catch them is to go out regularly – every 2 or 3 days – and catch them manually.

Sprinkling diatomaceous earth – an organic, silica-based material – directly on these beetles will control them by creating abrasions that will cause them to dry out.

These insects can overwinter in the soil.  Be sure to keep checking for them.  Google them if you want to learn more.
