Is the peach safe to eat after a wormy part is removed #878055

Asked July 20, 2024, 5:22 PM EDT

I have peaches for the first time. The variety is Belle of Georgia. However all peaches so far seem to have worms in them. Looks like could be plum curculio or something. Some peaches only have minor interior damage. Is it safe to eat what is left after the parts with the worms have been removed? I can’t find a definite answer. The peaches smell really good, that’s why I am even considering it. Thank you

Expert Response

Yes, the peaches are safe to eat. Even getting a bite with a worm in it won't hurt you. But you can cut out those areas and still eat the peaches. Peaches in Oklahoma really need to be on a regular pest control schedule to get good, clean fruit. For information on growing peaches see our fact sheets Planting and Early Care of the Peach Orchard and Home Tree Fruit Production and Pest Management.
