Hello Jessica,
The main rule of thumb for fall planting is that you want to give plants enough time to get established (4-6 weeks) before the first freeze. Depending where you are in Broomfield, our first freeze is typically early to mid October, making September a good time to plant. If you want to plant earlier, just keep an eye on the weather, avoid planting during extended high temperature spells, and be sure to provide enough water after planting. In either case, be sure to water your new plants when weather permits during the fall and winter. This CSU Extension Fact Sheet with more information on that.
