Thank you for this question. Yes there is a difference. Trimming involves clipping away or cutting branches to maintain the shape of a shrub or tree, a
"cosmetic touch-up" if you will. It also may be used to allow more light through to other plants, grass, etc. Pruning on the other hand is used to improve the structure of the plant. It involves removing crossing branches that are or may rub on each other, weak branches and dead branches. The goal of pruning is to improve the overall structure, strength and health of the tree now and into the future.
