Sick Kwanzan Cherry #877935

Asked July 19, 2024, 2:36 PM EDT

We planted a Kwanzan Cherry back in March or April and it is not happy. Previously in the same location there was a small maple. It was also unhappy and ultimately didn't make it. I think the bottom half is being eaten by deer, but something else is getting the leaves. It keeps putting out new sprouts.

Expert Response

Hi Natalie, thanks for the question.

It is possible that the deer ate the buds off the lower limbs; however, some sources suggest that deer are not all that interested in cherry trees.  The damage of the leaves is most likely caterpillar damage.  Another pest of this tree is the Japanese Beetle, but the damage does not seem to match.  Caterpillars, if feeding, can be controlled with Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki (Btk)  sprayed on the young tree. The damage to the leaves should not be a problem.  For being planted this year it looks like it is doing well, except for the deer damage.  Continue to keep it watered especially with high temps.  Mulching the young would be helpful. I hope this helps.
