Expert Response

Hello John,

The issue will be hard to diagnose without images of the damage. Can you share photos, please? Do you know when the browning started? Have the plants been in the ground for many years, or were they recently installed?

Leaf discoloration in Skip Laurel can occur due to under-watering and drought stress, over-watering and root rot, heavy spider mite feeding damage, branch dieback due to breakage or infection, heavy scale insect infestation, and phytotoxicity or physical damage from pesticide applications or exposure to vehicle exhaust (if next to an idling car on a driveway or roadway, for example).

Once we can narrow-down possible causes, we can make recommendations to avoid it becoming worse. (Leaves cannot heal, but regrowth can take its place if the plant can recover from the source of damage.)
