Expert Response

Hello Kenneth,

I've consulted with a colleague on our horticulture team in your area.  She knows of at least one cultivar of lilac bush, called Boomerang (link here), that is marketed specifically for its multiple blooms in a season.  So, this phenomenon is not completely unheard of in this species.  But given you have not seen this behavior before, it is more likely that some kind of stress triggered the multiple bloom response that seems to be turned on at all times in the Boomerang cultivar.

Have there been any stress conditions experienced by your lilac bush recently, perhaps heat and/or too little or too much moisture for a period?

thanx talon  (is falconry your sport?)  stress probably works... lots of conditions have set new records since the end of winter.

Happy to help, Kenneth.  And I haven't tried falconry yet, but maybe I should give it a go.
