Good Morning,
The most common cause of leaves dropping prematurely from apple and crabapple trees is a disease called Apple Scab. This disease is caused by a fungus called Venturia inaequalis. The disease overwinters on the fallen leaves and fruit. Picking up the fallen leaves/fruit and destroying them or removing them from the property is one of the best ways to reduce the disease symptoms in the following years. Pruning the tree by removing entire branches will open up the canopy and improve air flow and sunlight penetration. Improving air flow and light penetration will generally improve the tree's health and reduce the symptoms of apple scab.
