prune river birch sapling #877885

Asked July 19, 2024, 8:29 AM EDT

This 3' tall river birch sapling was nearly dead when planted, but I am happy to see that is is viable. The woody trunk is only showing signs of life within an inch of the ground, including some healthy shoots out of the ground. How and when do I prune this young tree for best shape and health? Thank you!!

Expert Response

These often grow as multi-trunk trees. Next year at the beginning of winter, you can remove any branches that you don't want. You'll want to select the three healthiest shoots and keep those. If you'd like a single trunk tree, select the healthiest shoot and keep that one, continue removing any new shoots as they appear.

I would strongly recommend protecting the tree with chicken wire or fencing, as rabbits and deer enjoy chewing on the tender shoots.
