How do I stop suckers from coming up at the base of redbud trees and the base of Canada Red Chokecherry trees? And how do I eliminate windmill grass from spreading or how do I get rid of it all together.

Expert Response

Hi Debbie,
Thank you for your question. Some trees, especially like a chokecherry are prone to suckering and there is not a lot you can do to prevent it. There is a product called sucker stopper that you apply before the suckers have begun to emerge, but you'll need to apply regularly.

In terms of windmill grass, it's a perennial weed which makes control a little more difficult. There is an herbicide labeled for use on windmill grass, Tenacity, but it may take several applications. Glyphosate will also kill it, but will kill any surrounding plants as well. Be sure to remove any seed heads before seeds develop to prevent more seed from establishing. https://www.extension.iastate.edu/turfgrass/blog/dr-nick-christians/windmill-grass-rears-its-ugly-head
When using any pesticide be sure to read the label and follow all label directions, the label is the law.

Let me know if you have any additional questions!
