japanese maple #877791

Asked July 18, 2024, 1:47 PM EDT

I have a 25 to 30 year old japanese maple. It is only about 5 to 6 feet tall and somewhat round in shape. I live in Cincinnati. This year the maple appears to be brownish red whereas in past years it was a bright dark red. It looks healthy except for the color. I believe it has received enough rain this year. I do not see any type of insects on it. I read that these trees live a long time. Do you think something is wrong with it?

Expert Response

Hi,
Yes, Japanese maples are a long-lived tree.   I'm going to ask a friend who's a consulting arborist to see if he has any ideas and I'll let you know what he says.

Hi again,
He said it could be lack of irrigation.  I compared the precipitation you've had with the average for your area and your June was extremely dry, receiving .8" of rain compared to the average of 3.86".  You may want to have an arborist check it in person to see if something is going on.  Good luck,

Thanks Barb. I will start watering my tree a lot for the next 30 days and see if there are any changes.

OK, good luck. And if you end up hiring an arborist, be sure to get a certified or consulting arborist.
