Lilacs leaves are turning brown and dying #877775

Hello!
We have a couple beloved lilac bushes that look like they are dying. They seemed happy this spring, but now almost all the leaves are turning brown, curling, and drying up. Some of the top leaves/shoots are still green, but even these have brown dots on them (see last picture).
One of these bushes was severely cut back a couple years ago due to construction and this one seems to be in the worst shape.
In the past, we've sometimes seen some mildew problems damaging the lower leaves, but nothing like this.
I wish I could be more specific about the timeline, but we've been really busy with a new baby and a toddler and so I didn't really notice it until yesterday. I feel like a few weeks ago I remember thinking how pretty the green foliage was outside so i think the damage may have happened quickly.
I was reading online about lilac blight and it sounds bad. Do you think that's what this is? Should we bring in a sample to the extension office to confirm? Is there anything we can do or do you think we will lose the bushes?
Thank you!

Hi Cassandra -
There are several diseases that could be causing your lilac problems. Here are some links describing them: https://apps.extension.umn.edu/garden/diagnose/plant/deciduous/lilac/tipsdarkcurled.html

Perhaps the best bet is to send a sample in to the Extension. This is what to do: https://www.canr.msu.edu/pestid/submit-samples/
I hope this is helpful.
