Summertime Moles? #877766

After 8 years of living here (fort collins, co), we suddenly have some new friends in our backyard. It appears to be moles but I'm not sure and also not sure what to do about such a critter. Could more new housing construction in the area be a reason?

Hi Joe,
Unfortunately, I can't open HEIC files, but we don't have moles in Colorado. We do have voles, which are kind of like mice with shorter tails. They are more pudgy too.
And yes, it's possible that if they are doing development in your neighborhood, the voles could be moving in. They tend to live in areas of tall grass (they like protection) and can come into landscapes to feed. They often chew lower branches and tunnel in lawns.
If you want to try to control the voles (if that's what they are), use unbaited mouse traps, set end-to-end. Ideally place a piece of gutter on top. The voles will run and get snapped. They don't need any baits. You can control a significant amount of voles this way. Ideally, you would want to find their current tracks/runs.
