cause of brown in lawn #877753

Asked July 18, 2024, 10:06 AM EDT

I was wondering what may be the cause of these brown fragmented trails of brown in my lawn? Does it have something to do with all the rain then heat in MN this year. How can I remedy this. I do see it in several lawns. Thank you for your help. Have a great day.

Thank you for your question and pictures. I'm not sure what type of fertilizing/mowing schedule you have. Is this lawn damage extensive in your lawn, or just a few patches? I believe the problem is white grubs which causes browning and dying of lawn areas. Here's some information from Extension with pictures and ways to control white grubs:

Grubs will feed on your lawn roots and the turf will appear to be eaten and pulled up. Fungus invading lawns is obvious and you will see fruiting structures:

The only other possibility would be herbicide drift. If an herbicide was applied near you (do you live near a farm?), and it was somewhat windy, it would kill any turf it encounters. I would consult a lawn care professional to answer some of your questions and can directly observe your areas of damage. Good luck to you and your lawn.
