Why are my Raspberry bushes turning yellow and how can I help them? #877688

Asked July 17, 2024, 4:57 PM EDT

I planted 4 raspberry bushes in my yard in early June and have noticed a couple are starting to get yellow leaves near the ground. The property has clay soil and gets pretty wet from all the rain so I put sand/compost mix around the area these bushes were planted and topped it off with some pine bark and western red cedar mulch. I am looking for information on what I can do to ensure their health and make sure they last! Thanks!

Raspberries like moisture, but they may be too wet.  Clay soil is really heavy and dense and can hold water.    If the ground is really wet, you may want to dig up your bushes and mix the sand/compost mix into the ground and then replant them.  Applying that mix and bark on top of the clay soil will only hold the moisture in more. I think for this year, remove the mulch and let the ground dry out a little.  You can add the mulch this fall if things dry.
