Help finding plants that are hardy, tall, evergreen, and thin #877670

Asked July 17, 2024, 4:05 PM EDT

We have a very unusual driveway and would appreciate any advice on plants that might work in the space. We live in Beaverton and will be full sun to part sun. The space next to the driveway is 400 feet long but only 3 feet wide. We are looking for tall, hardy, evergreen plants. Pefer does not have a solid hedge. It is a long shot, but I am hoping to have a couple of plants that look good together since it is such a long space. The other issue with the driveway is there is no irrigation so we will need to hand water for the first couple of years. The plants will need to be drought-tolerant. Thank you

Expert Response

Hi Meghan and thanks for your very specific question about plants to put along your driveway. If you don't want a solid hedge, plant the plants farther apart than 3 feet so there will be space in between. Nearly all plants need some summer water these days, but the following suggestions are supposed to be drought tolerant.

Arborvitae variety "Thin Man"
Juniper variety "Skyrocket"
Holly variety "Japanese Sky Pencil"
Yew variety "Stonehenge Skinny"

Sounds like an interesting challenge and you might try several of them to see which ones actually work best!
