It depends on where the wound occurred. A branch that broke off from the trunk may need a pruning cut made at the branch collar. These web pages describe correct pruning if needed. If the branch left a long area of torn bark from the trunk of the tree, some trimming might be needed. Do not put put any paint or other material over the wounded area. See these web pages.
