Evergreen hedge recommendations #877620

Asked July 17, 2024, 12:58 PM EDT

I asked this question to the Master Gardener program and they referred me to your program. I am looking for Native (and non) plant recommendations for 1/4-1/2 mile of sight and wind brake hedge. I was thinking of Tall Oregon Grape, but it is not quite tall enough. This is mostly going to be under power lines, so I want to go up to them, but not over them, 12-15 feet. I am not a Leyland Cyprus fan. So far I have come up with a mix of Tall Oregon Grape, wild lilac, xx Silktassel, Buck Brush, Hairy Manzanita, and Red Photinia. The first 3 might not be tall enough, but I can put them in the mix. The Red Photinia is not native, but I know it grows well and I like the splash of color. I was thinking I would be using bear root, but the nurseries have me talked into gal containers. Thanks, for your time and any suggestions, Rick Pugh Fairy Wood Farm

Expert Response

Hello Rick,

This sounds like an exciting and colorful hedge, a grower in Polk County has had great success with native hedges. While not native, Mock Orange does well here and is not invasive, and Blue Elderberry, Western Spirea, Osoberry, Osier dogwood, twin berry, choke cherry and Nootka rose are all recommended by extension. We have an excellent guide on hedges for and have attached the link, it was too large to attach as a PDF on Askextension.

Thank you very much and feel free to contact me if you have any other questions or clarifications!
