Oak leaf blister #877561

Asked July 16, 2024, 10:47 PM EDT

Hello, we have a large Red Oak (in the City of Duluth) that is exhibiting symptoms of what may be Oak Leaf Blister. As the pictures show, the leaves are curling, spotted brown, and drying out. Can you confirm if this may be Oak Leaf Blister or something else? And if it is, what do you recommend we do about it?

Expert Response

I can’t confirm that this is Oak leaf blister from photos.

It does look like it and below is some information that should help you. There is nothing to be done about it. It is very common in oaks and can be more severe in damp, wet springs which we have had this year.

The time to treat would be before bud break. Anything later is ineffective. So there is nothing you can do now. You would treat the tree early the following yer only if you have consecutive years of a heavy infestation.

This is mostly a cosmetic issue and though it looks extensive, leaves generally do not drop and there is plenty of green for photosynthesis.
