With all the rain this year, it is a bad year for fungal diseases. Keeping the tree's canopy open and airy by proper pruning is the best prevention for these diseases.
If the tree is newly planted, transplant shock is another (or compounding) possibility. In any case, there is not much to do now but wait and see.
