Question about newly planted salvia #877547

Asked July 16, 2024, 8:13 PM EDT

Hello! I have a question about some salvia that we just had planted. It is the perennial version, not the annual version. Should I cut off the blooms to encourage root growth while they establish themselves? I seem to remember being told that with some other perennials that I planted several years ago. I tried doing a Google search and I searched your database of answered questions and couldn't find as anything on it. Thanks in advance for your help. Kris

Expert Response

Hi Kris,

Yes, cutting off the blooms can encourage more root establishment, since it takes quite a bit of energy for the plant to flower. Or as soon as the plant blooms, remove the spent blooms or cut back the entire plant by about 1/3.

Be sure to keep watering it regularly for the first growing season to help it get established properly.
