Buckthorn removal #877472

Asked July 16, 2024, 1:02 PM EDT

I have cut down several buckthorn trees on the backside of my property. They are female plants with green berries on them. I am concerned with how to dispose of the plants; are the seeds from these hard green berries viable? If so, what is the best way to dispose of them to prevent spread of the plant? Ihave a woodchipper and intended to chip them out until I discovered the berries. I appreciate your help

Expert Response

The berries probably aren’t ripe yet and won’t be viable. As long as the berries don’t touch soil they won’t germinate if if they do they will die. I would cover the pile with a drop cloth or tarp for a week or until the leaves all wilt. This will keep the seeds from maturing.
