Suggestions for lawn renovation #877467

Asked July 16, 2024, 12:47 PM EDT

Despite multi-year contracts with various "lawn care" companies that promise the world, our lawn has never truly improved (beyond weeds being kept mostly at bay and grass growing faster). There are numerous bare patches, and we've seen a huge (and growing) infestation of Japanese Stiltgrass, Thistle, your typical dandelion/clover mix, grubs, and a few different grass types I've never seen before (perhaps it's just another type of weed!). When I request quotes and mention "renovation", every company we've contacted refuses to provide a quote... they only want to throw down some fertilizer and pesticides a few times a year and walk away. We need someone who is willing to actually look at the various issues we have and get our lawn back in shape. If you can't recommend a specific company, can you at least recommend proper Google search terms so I can find one? Terms like "lawn renovation" (and similar) only turn up landscapers, and that doesn't seem like it covers our needs. I don't have pictures at hand to attach, but I can certainly provide some if they will help. Thanks!

We are happy to help try to identify and guide on the process but yes photos will help.

If the space isn't too large, perhaps renovating with sod to start fresh is feasible. You will want to ask companies if they use Maryland certified sod or grass seed. The link shows a list of the  tall fescue seed varieties that have been proven to be helpful in our area.

Before starting any lawn project or asking for new companies to come out, we would advise you to get your soil tested. If the pH or acidity level is not in the optimum range for turf grass and any nutrients are lacking, then that could be contributing to the abundance of weed growth and struggling turf grass.

You can also visit our Lawn Renovation page for steps on how to rehab a lawn. What may be helpful is if you start fresh. A landscaping company would strip off the existing turf/weed mix, till the ground if it is hard compacted and not draining well, spread soil amendments with compost or topsoil or a mix of both, apply certified seed mix and cover with straw or a water retention product. You will then need to keep it watered daily until it sprouts. There should be searchable landscaping companies that will perform a lawn overhaul. You would not want them to do this until about mid September when the weather cools.

Alternately you can start aerating and overseeding this fall and applying a pre-emergent in the spring to help with the weed seeds. In time the desired grass species will outcompete the the weeds. You will need to continue to overseed in the fall for a few years to get the lawn established. You can follow the lawn care maintenance calendar to help guide you in this process.

You can search for reputable landscaping companies at the Maryland Landscape Contractors Association.
