the surfacants in bar soap supposedly weaken the chitinous exoskeletons of the cat flea. that supposedly kills the fleas. is this true?

Hello,
I have researched some information about flea management and am not seeing anything about specific bar soaps and surfactants. I am guessing this would also be variable based on the brand of soap since they will likely have different ingredients.

Below is some information about managing fleas in pets:

Plenty is written about dish soap, particularly Dawn Dish soap, for use in flea traps.  checking into ingredients on the dish soap on its website, a long list is provided, with ingredients used to lessen grease, etc.  It seemed perhaps 30% only were surfactants.  Dove no fragrance or gentle bar soap is about 50% surfactants, since it doesn't need to deal with grease and other stuff found on dishes and pans. It lowers surface tension by 2/3rds. Wikipedia has a lot of info on surfactants, and how they lower surface tension of water., and on insect exoskeletons That's why the flea traps work, the exoskeletons on the fleas are no longer intact after contacting the diluted dish soap, and they drown.

Hi Neil,
Yes, there is information about using dish soaps as insecticides online, however, these are typically not tested on a wider scale for efficacy or safety for this purpose. It is not recommended to use home cleaning products as pesticides since they are not designed to be or labeled to be pesticides. Manufacturers can change the ingredients at any time, and therefore an online recipe may no longer be as effective.

This publication, and others I have seen have recommended  traps with lights and sticky traps as being most effective in capturing fleas.

True, works better than other methods. As you no doubt are aware animals infested with fleas fortunate enough to get good Veterinary Care will be provided with insecticide and insect growth regulators with luck take care of the problem. Unfortunately for me and others we Are The Host and there are no veterinarians or medical doctors who will treat people with Veterinary diseases. People should be made aware that this can happen through contact with pets. Anything that you can do to publicize this please do.
