What kind of grass is this? #877453

Asked July 16, 2024, 11:29 AM EDT

This grass has been showing up in my front yard prairie project, and I absolutely cannot figure out what it is. I’m afraid it’s quackgrass, but there are too many other possibilities that I can’t tell the difference from (tall fescue, annual rye, reed canary, to name a few). Are the auricles clasping or just touching? I have no idea! Wondering if you could help, as I need to determine which control method to use. Thank you.

Hi Jordan, thanks for the question.

Identifying grasses can be a challenge. Yes, this looks like these are quack grass although pictures may not always tell the whole story.  If you have verified that this grass is aggressively rhizomatous, and has the clasping auricles it is probably quack grass.  Here are some tools that may help.

I hope this is helpful.
