No-See-Um's #877431

Asked July 16, 2024, 9:57 AM EDT

Can you suggest a way to avoid getting bitten by no-see-um's while doing yardwork? Can a yard be sprayed to kill these bugs?

Expert Response

Many species of no-see-ums live in water or in wet areas. With all of the rain we've received, this provides excellent conditions for them to thrive. Beyond eliminating standing water in the yard, your best option would be DEET or permethrin repellents or wearing a hat with netting or long sleeved outfits to reduce open skin.

Insecticides applied to the lawn would be broad spectrums that could also kill other non-target insects. Since they can fly in from areas beyond your own yard, even treating your own yard would not guarantee control.
