Yellowing Azalea #877416

Asked July 16, 2024, 7:41 AM EDT

I have three azaleas that are in dappled/full shade and while they did bloom in the Spring they are quite pale/yellow. There is some water that trickles under them due to a neighbor's "french drain". Do I need to relocate them away from this water source or would amending the soil to add acid/iron somehow be the thing to do. I have used an Espinosa product that adds acid and that has not done the job. Coffee grounds have also not worked. Thank you for your review and recommendations.

Hi Roger,

There can be several reasons why azaleas will develop yellow leaves (see link here: https://blogs.bu.edu/aldrichl/planting-tips/azalea-leaves-turning-yellow-causes-and-remedies/). I have some questions for you to help narrow it down:

1) How long have these azaleas been planted in this location?
2) Have you ever observed yellowing on them before in the summer?
3) How long has the water from the neighbor's property been directed toward them?
4) Has anything changed in the location this summer - such as removal of plants that used to shade these azaleas more than they are now?

If you are interested in testing the soil the azaleas are planted in, you can find instructions at:https://ohioline.osu.edu/factsheet/hyg-1132. I would advise getting a soil test before attempting to correct soil acidity, especially if these plants have been doing well in this location up until this summer.

You can reply directly to this email so that we can try to determine what might be going on for your azaleas.

Thank you!
