Last year my dog lost his eye. Migration of material through roof of mouth into eye. The pathology report of the eye showed organic, green, linear with barbs. I know foxtail. We don't have on property and dog doesn't leave property. It was October. What is green in
October. barbed. linear and barbed? I'm
stumped! Ideas? I don't want this to happen again. He does eat
grass. Thank you!!!

Expert Response
I am sorry to hear about your dog. Unfortunately I can't think of a specific seed or type of vegetation that may have been the culprit. Could it have been a thorn or part of a larger seed or plant that broke off? Hedge mustard comes to mind because it has sharp seed pods, but I don't think it would be green in the fall. If you find a plant that you feel might pose risk as late summer and fall approach, please send photos directly to the email address below and I'll try to help.
Thank you! The linear, green with barbs also what gets me late Sept. Oct. I could see foxtail blown in and somehow he got early spring. But green in Late Sept. early Oct is a stumper. I'll keep my eyes peeled this fall. - charla
