Help Parkland Pillar Tree Infestation #877404
Asked July 15, 2024, 10:34 PM EDT
Hello,
Our Parkland Pillar trees were really healthy until last fall when they displayed dead branches. We thought if we cut out the dead areas maybe whatever plagued them would have passed on and they could recover.
Now, when I inspect the trees--
- leaves displaying the following characteristics:
- are glossy
- have a sticky residue
- light dusty spots are on the back
- small flies are buzzing around on the leaves
- Attached are photos
Thank you for any assistance you can provide!

Hi April,
Thank you for contacting Ask Extension.
It appears your Parkland Pillar tree may have an aphid infestation. Other pests may create the sticky residue, often called honeydew, as well, however aphids are the most likely cause. A tree can be stressed by environmental conditions including large changes in temperature or precipitation. Rock mulch which can compact the soil and generate hotter conditions can be a factor as well.
As the tree is quite tall, I would consult a professional service to treat the infestation.
Kindest regards,
