Monarch Raising #877397

Asked July 15, 2024, 9:31 PM EDT

Hello, we live just outside the cities and have a bunch of milkweed on our property but no monarchs. I was wondering if there is any programs that need help raising and releasing monarchs.

Hi Rebecca,

The monarch population does seem even lower than usual. Some of this could be linked to the fact that we’re less likely to see them in rainy weather, but I’ve barely seen any in my own yard.

Many of the efforts to raise and release monarchs are done by private citizens on their own. I don’t know of any coordinated group efforts to do this. In fact, there’s been criticism that these efforts may actually hurt the wild monarch population. See this page:

Here’s links to some organizations that are working on monarch issues. You’ll have to check if there’s any way to help.

With your milkweed your yard is already a way station for butterflies and other beneficial insects. Thanks for your efforts
