Japanese maples and current hot weather #877375

Asked July 15, 2024, 6:27 PM EDT

Here in Eugene, we have a very old Japanese maple. It is 15 - 20 feet tall. This last week it started dropping curled, dry leaves; it is half bare now! I have been watering deeply (I thought), and everything else around it is okay...is it just stress? Are others experiencing this currently (July/2024) in the Southern Willamette Valley?

Expert Response

An established tree like this would not require a great deal of water to keep going, even in this heat. However, most of that water will be needed to the edge of the canopy where the young roots are located. A picture of the tree would help greatly showing the area around it as well. It is possible to overwater in a dense soil like clay.
