Is this seed tag an acceptable mix

Montgomery County Maryland

Expert Response

Based on the label information, it's not an ideal choice for a few reasons, and we'll link to some of our lawn web pages that provide more information. (It's not a horrible mix overall, but other options might be better choices.)
  • The percentage of ryegrass is much higher at nearly 30% than we'd recommend, which is between 5% and 15% of the mix. Ryegrass can be more vulnerable to turfgrass diseases. Its faster germination rate is one reason it's included in seed blends, and when used as a higher percentage of a mix, might be used to make a seed mix look like it's getting off to a good start, or perhaps to help reduce erosion.
  • The "other crop seeds" percentage, while at least somewhat low at 2.66%, should ideally be zero or no higher than half a percent (0.5).
  • The "weed seed" percentage at .02 is low and thus not bad, but would ideally be zero.
  • Of the three tall fescue cultivars listed (Technique, Fawn, and Bandit), only Technique is mentioned on our current Recommended Turfgrass Cultivars publication. (The 2024 edition probably won't be ready until August sometime.) It's possible the other two were considered good cultivars years ago, but if so, they've since been supplanted by other top performers based on Maryland and Virginia field trials.

Hello Mike,

You shouldn't need to go to the trouble of having seed custom-blended, though if you do, just aim to have as much of the species mix included (tall fescue plus any Kentucky bluegrass or perennial ryegrass added) be sourced from the cultivar list presented in the UMD Recommended Turfgrass Cultivars publication. This publication will be updated with the 2024 edition as soon as it's available, which might take a couple more weeks. Make sure that perennial ryegrass, if included, comprises no more than 15% of the seed mix, though a lower percentage is ideal.
