Grape Leaf Condition #877336

Asked July 15, 2024, 3:03 PM EDT

I have 6 grape vines of different varieties planted along our patio in our SW Bend yard. The lower/older leaves on all but one of the vines appear as the attached photo. The newer growth appears clear green until maybe they get older. What does this indicate? Is there anything I should be doing to prevent whatever it is?

Expert Response

Hi Pitney,

Thanks for the photo. The leaf damage looks like it might be an insect: grape leafhoppers.

Do you see any tiny insects fly off the leaf when you shake the leaves?

Thanks Lisa:  Yes.  I see a herd of tiny white-ish insects flying off.  Is there something I can do?  John Pitney

Hi John,

I believe the damage is consistent with leafhoppers; the tiny adults will fly off the leaf if you shake it.

Here are two links for more information and management options:

Grape-Leafhopper | Pacific Northwest Pest Management Handbooks (pnwhandbooks.org)

This link has good photos/examples of leafhopper damage on grapes and discusses management as well: https://pubs.nmsu.edu/_h/H332/

If you have a Virginia Creeper vine, check it as well as they are prone to leafhoppers.

Please reach out if you have further questions.
