Dear Joanniss,
Thank you for contacting us about the fall planting dates for Jackson County. As you may know, the first frost date is an average that is computed over a period of years. With climate change, the growing season is slightly longer than it has been historically. However, the weather is apt to be more erratic, so gardeners need to allow for unexpected changes.
The most recent weather data indicates the expected date of your first frost is between Oct. 21 and Oct. 31. The actual date may occur as much as 10 days before or after these dates, so be prepared to protect tender crops in eve. that temperatures are predicted to dip below 40 F degrees.
The chart provides dates for different seeding methods. If it is too hot outdoors, you may need to start seeds indoors until the temperatures cool off and you can safely transplant them outdoors.
Now, all that being said, the National Garden Association provides earlier dates, however, I believe their data is older and therefore more conservative. You may want to check their chart for fall planting dates: https://garden.org/apps/calendar/?q=Medford%2C+OR#google_vignette
I hope this information is helpful. Please write again whenever you have gardening questions.
