How to deal with blackberries #877325

Asked July 15, 2024, 2:27 PM EDT

Hello, I am trying to get rid of blackberries in the back part of my yard. I cut them down and covered them with fabric thinking that was going to be enough to stop them (naive I guess! These plants are resilient!) . I don't want to go the herbicide route just yet would prefer any natural means before I do that. Also on a slope so it becomes difficult to continuously cut. Thanks!

Thank you for your question, Antonio.  Here is what OSU recommends:  https://solvepestproblems.oregonstate.edu/weeds/himalayan-blackberry

Hope this is helpful.  Good luck!

Hi,

Do you have any  recommendation for natural herbicides? I've found some suggestions that vinegar or baking soda might work but hesitant in using them if they won't work.

Thanks for sharing the link it is very thorough!

I am afraid that there are no "natural" (or even organic) herbicides that control blackberries (unless you count elbow grease).  The botanical characteristics of this species makes them especially good at resisting any but the most toxic of herbicides, all of which are listed here:  https://pnwhandbooks.org/weed/problem-weeds/blackberry-vines-wild-rubus-spp

I wish we had better information for you, but they'll probably outlast humans.
