Cryptomeria and Golden Pacific Juniper browning #877308

Asked July 15, 2024, 1:29 PM EDT

5 year old Cryptomeria japonica planted in full sun and raised bed with 5 year old Golden Pacific Juniper below, browning in spots. Have treated once with spray-on general purpose fungicide/insecticide but it looks the same. What next?

Wake County North Carolina

Expert Response

Maybe heat stress with lack of adequate water last 60 days. No signs of live or dead bugs.

Hello,

Sorry about your plants die back.  I think it is most likely a fungus affecting both cryptomeria japonica and the juniper.  Probably due to the excessive moisture we have been having in central NC.

I would first make sure you have good air circulation in all the plants in the picture you sent, prune if necessary.  Then go ahead and cut back the dead, brown areas of each plant.  Since they are in a raised beds I expect that they do not have "wet feet", wet roots.  That is good. Try to avoid wetting the foliage in the future.

Here is a basic but helpful detail of the cryptomeria shrub and a video on its care.
