Sour cherry fruit rot #877287

Asked July 15, 2024, 12:08 PM EDT

My tree had a bumper crop of cherries. I only got about a quarter of the fruit picked before the hot weather. The remainder is fermenting on the tree and appears that some of the fungus has started. What do I do to keep my tree healthy? It is 7-8 years old and beautiful.

Expert Response

We can't be sure what's causing the fruits to go bad but, based upon your comments, we suspect a fungal disease called brown rot.

This very common disease affects cherries, plums and other stone fruits.  Go here to learn about brown rot and what to do about it.

If you think the decay is caused by something other than brown rot, please reply to this message and attach sharp, closeup photos of the affected fruit.
