Veggie garden not growing #877262

Asked July 15, 2024, 10:41 AM EDT

I've never had a garden year like this one. I planted the same variety of green peppers that I always plant (Aristotle) and only one plant produced a single flower and a pepper. The plants never got bigger than they were when purchased. My heirloom tomatoes did grow but have produced very view flowers/fruits. I also had two "Thessaloniki" plants simply shrivel and die. The only thing that produces anything so far are the snap peas and wax beans. Tomatoes and peppers got Tomato Tone applied when they were planted and have been watered regularly. I found blossom end rot on one tomato, so also dressed all the plants with calcium nitrate. It has been the most disappointing garden season. (Not significant, but a friend in S. Carolina, quite near the ocean, is having a similar year. Strange.)

Expert Response

It is most frustrating when you do what you have done before with your vegetable garden and the results are nowhere near as good as in the past.  We feel your pain!  The trouble you are having with peppers and tomatoes are discussed in the links below, along with tips and information for best practices.  It seems likely that the variations in Ohio weather this growing season  may be responsible for less than expected production of fruits.  Both tomatoes and peppers prefer particular temperatures, both daytime and night-time heat needing to be in their best range.  If low temperatures are too high, both plants may not be able to produce bloom, or may drop bloom that does set.  There may be little you can do to change this situation.
