Asiatic garden beetles #877257

Asked July 15, 2024, 10:32 AM EDT

Greetings. I am loosing several plants and I believe that the Asiatic garden beetles are the culprit. I have started pulling and discarding plants. I read your MSU article. My lights are not the problem and I do not have any beetles in the house or on the porch. I also read that I should take care of my lawn. I use organics in the garden. Would beneficial Nematodes applied in the Spring before all the bad insects hatch help??? Please help.

Expert Response

You are correct that there is a connection between lawns and the beetles. As larvae, they are grubs that feed on the roots of turf. Nematodes can be effective if applied according to instructions and at the right times - mid Aug - mid Sep. See here for additional details: https://extension.entm.purdue.edu/publications/E-271/E-271.html
If Asiatic Garden Beetle is the problem, be sure not to use milky spore as that is only effective against Japanese beetles.
