Our tree is a huge tree on a slight slope in our backyard. The soil has been washed away and all these little feeder roots are above ground. We are wondering how to handle this problem. Can we cut off these roots? I know we need to add more soil on top of the ground and find a way to keep it there I’m going to try to include a picture my name is Joyce McCrea and we live at 35200 Aspen Wood Ln. in Willoughby Ohio. Your tree is already stressed tree; so, you cannot remove roots as it will compromise the health further. From the image, the extent of the root system above ground is an indication that you have highly compacted soils and the tree is attempting to deal with the lack soil oxygen by positioning roots above grade. This is also likely to be a doughty area as the tree is taking up all the moisture it can from the upper layer of soil. If the tree has a healthy crown and no apparent indications of decline, then the best thing you can do for the tree is apply a layer of mulch not more than 2" thick covering the entire area. This will protect the roots while allowing them to access the water and oxygen they need. If there are any indications of decline, dead limbs, fungal fruits structures, then I recommend that you contact a certified arborist with a tree risk assessment qualification to assess the situation.
